Historic Solomon

"Where Gila Valley pioneer heritage meets agricultural legacy."

Founded in the late 1870s by Isador Elkan Solomon—who opened a local mercantile and burned mesquite charcoal for the massive Clifton copper mines—the town originally known as Solomonsville was the beating heart of early Southeastern Arizona. Serving as the very first county seat of Graham County until 1915, this tight-knit community remains a vital, proud pillar of the Gila Valley's agricultural and Hispanic heritage today.

Culinary Renaissance & Local Dining

For decades, the adobe walls at the corner of the highway housed the legendary La Paloma Restaurant, a staple of local Hispanic cuisine and community gatherings. Today, that historic footprint has experienced a complete culinary rebirth.

Now home to Mangiamo Italian Restaurant, the beloved building has been meticulously refreshed, bringing authentic, family-style Italian dining, fresh house-made pastas, and hand-tossed pizzas to the heart of Solomon.

Because Solomon is surrounded by some of the most fertile farmland in Arizona, it is fittingly the home of the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension for Graham County. This vital agricultural institution provides local farmers, ranchers, and families with science-based research, 4-H youth programs, and master gardener resources to sustain the valley's agrarian economy.

Honoring Veterans American Legion Post #95

Spiritual Center Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish

A profound spiritual cornerstone for the Solomon community, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church has faithfully served generations of families in the Gila Valley. Deeply intertwined with the town's rich Hispanic heritage, the parish continues to be a vibrant center for worship, community service, and beautiful traditional cultural celebrations.

Antiquities, Lore & Hollywood Roots

Civic Heritage El Beneficio Propio

A true monument to the region's Hispanic heritage, El Beneficio Propio was historically established as a mutual aid society (Sociedad Mutualista). Long before modern safety nets existed, this organization and its historic hall served as a communal lifeline—providing financial, social, and cultural support for Mexican-American families navigating the early days of the Gila Valley.

Silver Screen Legends Charles Stevens

Did you know Solomon has ties to the dawn of Hollywood? Born in Solomonsville in 1893 (and famously claiming to be the grandson of Geronimo), Charles Stevens became a prolific character actor during the silent film era. A lifelong friend of swashbuckler Douglas Fairbanks, Stevens appeared in nearly 200 films over a 50-year career, bridging the rugged Arizona territory with the glamour of early cinema.
